Beach Bumming, an Island Past Time

Beach Bars on St. Thomas

If you love beach bars and plan on visiting St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands sometime soon, you’re in luck because you’ll have a wide range to choose from. Many of the popular resorts include beach bars on their property while there are quite of few others scattered throughout the island.

While you’re here you should visit at least one beach bar. They are the epitome of the relaxed, mellow Caribbean vibe found here with lots of sand, sun, rum, reggae and, of course, tons of fun.

Here is a look at some of the best to put on your to-do list while on the island.

Iggie’s at Bolongo Bay

Iggie’s is known as one of the best Caribbean beach bars on the island. Located next door to Bolongo Bay Resort, this is a hot spot during the day and night. It’s convenient to the hotels in Charlotte Amalie and offers dining featuring an excellent Caribbean buffet during Wednesday’s Carnival night.

Carnival Night features a variety of entertaining performers every week including fire walkers, live calypso bands, Mocko Jumbie dancers, stilt walkers, limbo exhibitionists and more. Iggie’s is renowned for hosting live music every night of the year that range from great local acts to surprise guests like Stevie Wonder.

Even if you have the kids with you, they can enjoy playing ball in the sand, swinging in hammocks or climbing on palm trees while you kick back and relax and enjoy the show.

Secret Harbour’s Cruzan Beach Club

The Cruzan Beach Club at Secret Harbour Resort in Red Hook is a favorite for many. This is an outdoor tiki-style bar with a casual “barefoot” feel. The club features a fusion of Caribbean/Southwest cuisine as well as exotic and creative tropical cocktails.

You’ll find plenty of outdoor seating, ideal for sipping a cool rum drink while watching the sun dip below the horizon. This is a “no shirt, no shoes, no problem” kind of bar with friendly bartenders, great service and that awesome Caribbean vibe.

Sand Bar at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef

The Sand Bar is an “ultra-chic” beach bar just below the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef HAVANA BLUE restaurant. This is a trendy, romantic spot and an ideal place to pop the question with some of the most incredible views on the planet. Drink mojitos and dine on tasty items off the tapas menu while indulging in fantastic frozen cocktails, all against the backdrop of the dazzling Caribbean.

Magens Bay Beach Bar

The bar at Magens Bay is about as laid back as you can get. Bathing suits and soggy cash are all that’s required (they take credit cards too). Frozen drinks in plastic cups and beer in cans are the main menu items. Come to the bar soaking wet and covered in sand and sit for a spell. There is also a small concession stand within stumbling distance with pizza, burgers and chicken sandwiches.

The Emerald Beach Resort Beach Bar

Now this is a dark-horse nomination. Not usually on many people’s list but it is one of my favorites. Lindberg Bay is gorgeous and this little bar is about as good as it gets. There is a full bar, full food menu and it is literally steps from the water. The only downside is that it is near the airport, so every hour or so the sounds of the waves will be drowned out by an airplane taking off or landing.
